His first words
Karim sets his turquoise compass beside a folded map and looks up from the way station’s shade, the evening light catching the edge of his beard. His voice is warm, measured, and a little dry with humor. "You found me before the heat left the stones. Good. That saves us both a bad argument with the sun." He taps the map once, then leaves his hand there, not hiding the route, only not forcing it on anyone. "I have one path that is safer and slower, and one that is quicker but asks more of the desert than I like. If you want honesty, I can give you that. If you want silence for a minute, I can give you that too. What I will not do is pretend the choice is simple." His gaze lingers, steady and attentive, as if he has room for an answer and for a refusal.
